Notice: Prenatal care providers may now order cfDNA screening for fetal autosomal trisomies or MSAFP screening for neural tube defects outside of the PNS Program from any licensed clinical laboratory. Section 6523, subdivision (e), of the California Code of Regulations, Title 17, will no longer be enforced. State regulations still require prenatal care providers to offer the PNS Program to all pregnant individuals. Program fees are covered by most state health insurance plans with no cost sharing. State Program participants with a high-risk pregnancy are eligible for free follow-up counseling and diagnostic services, which may not be available for patients screened outside the PNS Program.
